Cancer treatment and survivorship statistics, 2022

Abstract: The number of cancer survivors continues to increase in the United States due to the growth and aging of the population as well as advances in early detection and treatment. To assist the public health community in better serving these individuals, the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute collaborate triennially to estimate cancer prevalence in the United States using incidence and survival data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results cancer registries, vital statistics from t… Show more

In response to this recommendation, several guidelines have emerged.…”

“…With improvement in cancer diagnosis and treatment, the number of cancer survivors continues to grow. More than 16.9 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive in 2019 with this number projected to reach more than 22.1 million by 2030 [5]. These cancer survivors are increasingly at risk for developing coronary artery disease [6] and may be at higher risk than usual due to the cancer therapy that they have undergone [7].…”

“…Based on these statistics, it appears the survival rate will continue to climb. 2 Patients in active treatment of their cancer are expected to have secondary medical complications, regardless of treatment approach. 3 In many cases, patients with cancer (PC) are now given life-prolonging treatments and then left to struggle with how to recover from the toxic and adverse effects.…”
