Cancer surveillance based on imaging techniques in carriers ofBRCA1/2gene mutations: a systematic review

Abstract: We have systematically reviewed the literature focusing on the performance of surveillance programmes and imaging techniques for the early diagnosis of breast and ovarian cancer in women carrying mutations in BRCA1/2 genes. A search for relevant articles published between 1996 and 2005 (inclusive) was run on Medline, Embase and other databases. Of the 749 articles retrieved, only 13 met the inclusion criteria. Of these, 12 provided information on breast cancer surveillance, 1 on ovarian cancer surveillance and… Show more

“…Intensive screening is reportedly tolerated and preferred by women at high risk over options such as prophylactic mastectomy [25,26]. Trials are ongoing to optimize breast cancer surveillance strategies for carriers of BRCA1/2 mutations or women who are otherwise at high risk for developing breast cancer [27][28][29].…”

“…Intensive screening using various imaging modalities is reportedly tolerated and preferred by women at high risk, compared to options such as prophylactic mastectomy (9,10). Many investigations have focused upon finding the best strategies for screening surveillance of women with high breast cancer risk (11,12). In the Uk women at very high risk of familial breast cancer are being offered annual surveillance with magnetic resonance imaging from age 30 to 49 years and annual mammography from the age of 40-69 (13).…”

“…Assessments of lifetime ovarian cancer risk for women who carry the mutations are still being defined: currently, they range from 16% to 60% for BRCA1 and 10-27% for BRCA2 [29,43,47].…”
