Cancer Studies under Space Conditions: Finding Answers Abroad

Abstract: In this review article, we discuss the current state of knowledge in cancer research under real and simulated microgravity conditions and point out further research directions in this field. Outer space is an extremely hostile environment for human life, with radiation, microgravity, and vacuum posing significant hazards. Although the risk for cancer in astronauts is not clear, microgravity plays a thought-provoking role in the carcinogenesis of normal and cancer cells, causing such effects as multicellular sp… Show more

“…During space flights, astronauts are exposed to an increased risk of cancer due to their increased exposure to hazardous factors such as ionizing radiation, solar particle events, and the Van Allen belt. Among the various damages caused by radiation, the one caused to DNA is quite important, and although the body has repairing mechanisms, they can still create irreversible conditions leading to, among other things, the development of tumors [ 203 , 204 , 205 , 206 ].…”

“…The protein-coding gene mutations involve tumor-suppressor genes, transmembrane proteins, platelet-derived growth factors, sex hormones, components of the insulin-like growth factor axis, transcription factors of the forkhead/winged helix-box transcription factor (Fox), and the SMAD families. Signal transduction pathways that are involved in carcinogenesis include sonic hedgehog (SHH), Wnt, and Notch [2]. There are also viruses like the human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein-Barr virus, and Hepatitis B and C, which are oncogenic [53].…”

“…Beyond the stressors of getting to space, such as vibration and acceleration forces, microgravity and radiation are the most significant hazards during space travel [2]. There are other sources of physiological and psychological stress during spaceflight, including circadian shifting, dietary alterations, confined spaces, and isolation [2].…”
