Cancer stem cells: An insight

Abstract: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) have the ability to self-renew and are present in most tissues including breast, brain, lung, head and neck, prostates, testis, ovary, esophagus, colon and liver. Their origin is yet to be discovered though a series of hypotheses have been proposed in this regard. CSCs play a role in not only the creation of cancer but also its evolution, metastasis and recurrence. CSCs have an important role in cancer therapy and the resistance toward chemotherapeutic agents. This article reviews the … Show more

“…The carcinogenicity of colorectal CSCs is a multistep process characterized by a series of genetic alterations. 7,10 Research on CSCs has begun to attract increasing attention, and computational annotations for assessing these mRNA functions have been proven to be effective. 30 We performed GO and KEGG enrichment analyses for our hypothetical gene sets to explore the functions of these 155 genes, and the results showed involvement in significant the biological processes and KEGG pathways mentioned above.…”

“…Recently, this same group demonstrated the chemopreventive effect of a special diet supplemented with falcarinol and falcarindiol on colorectal precancerous lesions in a dose-dependent manner; besides, this effect was mainly mediated by inhibition of NF-κB and its downstream inflammatory markers, especially COX-2 [299]. Anticarcinogenic properties of falcarinol were also demonstrated in cancer stem-like cells (CSCs), in which it played an essential role in tumor occurrence, evolution, metastasis, recurrence, and therapeutic resistance [300], as well as in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) [301]. Essentially, falcarinol eliminated CSC population in NSCLC and abolished lung tumor formation in mice via HSP90 (a molecular chaperone of numerous oncoproteins) modulation [302].…”

“…The CSC hypothesis key points include that only a minute number of cells inside a tumor have tumorigenic potential and can be separated from the rest of tumor cells. Furthermore, CSC-induced tumors contain a mixed population of tumorigenic and non-tumorigenic cells of the original tumor and can also be transplanted in various generations [15,16]. Thus, the overall concept is that CSCs have self-renewal and heterogenic differentiation potential, which results in tumor formation [14] (Figure 1).…”
