Cancer Risk in HBV Patients With Statin and Metformin Use

Abstract: Chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) often causes chronic inflammation of the liver with an increased incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HBV-infected individuals may also have an increased incidence of nonliver cancers. Taking statin or metformin may decrease inflammation and infiltration, which may, as a result, reduce the risk of liver cancer or other major cancers in patients with HBV infection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that statin and metformin could redu… Show more

“…The morbidity and major complication rates were similar between the groups. The postoperative hospital stay was significantly shorter in the statin than non-statin group [13 (10-16) days vs. 15 (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19) days, P = 0.022].…”

“…The protective effects of statins against the development of HCC were recently indicated in patients with hepatitis B (11)(12)(13) and hepatitis C (14,15), although conflicting results have also been reported (16). Use of nucleoside analogues, statins, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)/ aspirin were reportedly associated with a reduced risk of HCC recurrence in patients with hepatitis B, who underwent liver resection (17).…”

“…In short, on the basis of current evidence metformin [262,263], statins [264,265], or their combination [266] may potentially be useful in this setting. However, most data derive from observational studies and RCTs are warranted before chemoprevention of HCC can be licensed for clinical practice.…”
