Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common malignant tumor in men and the second in women. This disease is a significant civilization and social problem. So far, the highest incidence has been among people over 60 years of age. However, nowadays, more and more cases of colorectal cancer are recorded in patients under 40 years of age. This is a very worrying phenomenon and a public health challenge. The aim : of the study was to asses the knowledge of people aged 18 to 40 on risk factors and prevention of colorectal cancer Material and method The research was conducted from November 2022 to January 2023. The research used the diagnostic survey method, while the research tool was a proprietary questionnaire. The online questionnaire concerned issues related to risk factors and prevention of colorectal cancer. The study was conducted among 185 people under 40 years of age. Results: The vast majority of respondents had heard of CRC (88.7%). According to 68.1% of respondents, the risk of CRC increases with age. Only 42.2% of the respondents were aware that colorectal cancer can develop in young people. The main predisposing factors were the presence of adenoma-type polyps in the large intestine (95.1%), excessive body weight (83.8%), incorrect diet (92.4%). Only 31.9% of the respondents correctly indicated the definition of primary prevention. Conclusions Knowledge about colorectal cancer prevention was unsatisfactory Full knowledge about preventive examinations can reduce barriers to screening. Nationwide public health efforts are needed to raise awareness of colorectal cancer among young people.

Purpose American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations have some of the lowest cancer screening rates compared to other racial/ethnic populations. Using community-based participatory research methods, we sought to characterize knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and approaches to enhance breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer screening. Methods We conducted 12 focus groups between October 2018 and September 2019 with 96 eligible AI adults and healthcare providers, recruited using non-probability purposive sampling methods from the Zuni Pueblo in rural New Mexico. We used the Multi-level Health Outcomes Framework (MHOF) to conduct a qualitative content analysis identifying mutable systems- and individual- level constructs important for behavior change that we crosslinked with the Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommended evidence-based interventions (EBIs) or approaches. Results Salient systems-level factors that limited uptake of cancer screenings included inflexible clinic hours, transportation barriers, no on-demand service and reminder systems, and brief doctor–patient encounters. Individual-level barriers included variable cancer-specific knowledge that translated into fatalistic beliefs, fear, and denial. Interventions to enhance community demand and access for screening should include one-on-one and group education, small media, mailed screening tests, and home visitations by public health nurses. Interventions to enhance provider delivery of screening services should include translation and case management services. Conclusions The MHOF constructs crosslinked with CPSTF recommended EBIs or approaches provided a unique perspective to frame barriers and promoters of screening utilization and insights for intervention development. Findings inform the development of culturally tailored, theoretically informed, multi-component interventions concordant with CPSTF recommended EBIs or approaches aimed at improving cancer screening.

Cancer Prevention and Diagnosis Knowledge among Spanish-speaking Older Latino/as Residing in Tampa, Florida

Objective: Cancer remains the leading cause of death among Latino/as in the United States, and advancing age is a major risk factor for developing most cancer types. Given the growing population of Latino/as immigrants aged ≥60 years and the current lack of relevant data, this study aims to understand the cancer prevention and perception of cancer diagnosis among older Latinos to ensure that they receive effective prevention, intervention, and psychosocial care.Method: A survey exploring attitudes about cancer was developed and administered in Spanish. Using convenience sampling, 168 individuals identifying as Latino/as were surveyed in Tampa, Florida. Descriptive analysis was conducted to understand study population characteristics. Frequencies were assessed to understand the participants’ responses to cancer-related attitude questions. The effects of age, country of origin, length of stay in the United States, and marital status on the participants’ cancer-related attitudes were assessed using logistic regression.Results: The mean age of the study participants was 67.9 years, 34.5% were male, and the mean length of stay in the United States was 25.8 years. In total, 29% and 24.4% of the participants knew that breast cancer and prostate cancer, respectively, can be diagnosed early. Individuals with an elementary education were less likely to have sufficient knowledge of cancer prevention and diagnosis. Additionally, 93.5% of the population was aware that tobacco use can lead to cancer, and 84.5% knew that exposure to tobacco smoke can affect both the smoker and their family.Conclusion: Older Latino/as possess knowledge about cancer causes yet lack knowledge regarding cancer prevention and diagnosis, potentially creating barriers and causing them to avoid treatment. Focusing on cancer-related health education among older Latino/as is a step toward appropriate and equitable cancer care.Ethn Dis. 2022; 32(3):185-192; doi:10.18865/ed.32.3.185
