Cancer-Related Fatigue: Central or Peripheral?

Abstract: To evaluate cancer-related fatigue (CRF) by objective measurements to determine if CRF is a more centrally or peripherally mediated disorder, cancer patients and matched noncancer controls completed a Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) and underwent neuromuscular testing. Cancer patients had fatigue measured by the BFI, were off chemotherapy and radiation (for more than four weeks), had a hemoglobin level higher than 10 g/dL, and were neither receiving antidepressants nor were depressed on a screening question. The… Show more

“…15 These deficits are sensitive to neuromuscular measures of skeletal muscle endurance. 16 In fact, deficits in muscular performance are associated with a reduction in the quality of life and increase in symptoms related to cancer in breast cancer survivors. 17,18 Previous research has mainly focused on land-based exercise programs, but many benefits can be obtained with the aquatic environment.…”

“…Although many mechanisms have been proposed for cancer-related fatigue [14][15][16][17][18], the cause remains elusive. Additionally, early biomarkers prognostic for radiation-induced fatigue have not been identified.…”

“…Another common symptom that prostate cancer patients experience is fatigue [10][11][12] . This fatigue which appears to primarily reflect central nervous system mechanisms 13 , imposes many challenges on their lives by significantly interfering with their functional performance i.e. ability to perform selfcare, work and leisure activities 12 , thus further contributing to reductions in their quality of life.…”
