Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a human herpes virus type 8 (HHV-8) driven neoplasm with varying morphologic features and attendant diagnostic dilemma. This study presents the trend of KS in our environment and the different morphologic variants, with a view to arousing awareness and reducing missed and delayed diagnosis. KS accounted for 18.34% and 59.66% of vascular neoplasms and malignant vascular neoplasms, respectively with most KS occurring in the background of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). The frequency peaked in 2013 and began to decline with a fairly even sex distribution. There are diverse variants of KS that can pose diagnostic challenges. Hence, there is need for this awareness to enhance prompt and accurate diagnosis.

Introduction: There exists a knowledge gap in the quality and quantity of cancer-related research in Nigeria. This review gives a report on cancer research literature indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) in Nigeria from 1990 -2019. Materials and methods: The data used in the present study were published research papers retrieved from the Web of Science. Results: A total of 629 research articles were published within this period across 276 journals. The highest number of articles was published in 2019 (n = 62), while the least was in 1992 (n = 2). However, the last ten years witnessed explosive growth, and it accounted for 63% of the total number of articles. The most relevant authors are Olapade HI (33 articles), Huo D (28 articles), and Ogundiran TO (21 articles). The most relevant sources in the area of cancer research in Nigeria are Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice (52 articles), East African Medical Journal (23 articles), and African Health Sciences (21 articles). The most relevant author's affiliations are University of Ibadan (n=206), University of Nigeria, Nsukka (n = 115), and Obafemi Awolowo University (n = 105). Conclusion: The results from this study show that Nigerian institutions need to collaborate extensively with foreign institutions and partner with industries in order to improve the quality of their research output.

Patterns of Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer Among Nigerians and African Americans

PURPOSE Colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence rates are increasing among individuals < 50 years of age (early-onset CRC) globally with causes unknown. Racial/ethnic disparities in early-onset CRC have also grown more pronounced, because Black individuals have higher early-onset CRC incidence and poorer survival compared with White individuals. We describe the prevalence and burden of early-onset CRC among Africans in Nigeria and African Americans (AAs) in the United States. PATIENTS AND METHODS We identified Black individuals diagnosed with a first primary CRC ages 18 to 49 years between 1989 and 2017 at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital in Zaria, Nigeria (Nigerians), and in the United States (AAs) using the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute’s SEER program of cancer registries. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to investigate clinical and demographic differences between Nigerians and AAs with early-onset CRC, adjusted for age, sex, tumor site, and histology. RESULTS A total of 5,019 Black individuals were diagnosed with early-onset CRC over the study period (379 Nigerians; 4,640 AAs). Overall, approximately one third of young Black patients were diagnosed with rectal tumors (35.8%). Nigerian individuals with early-onset CRC were eight-fold more likely to be diagnosed with rectal tumors (odds ratio [OR], 8.14; 95% CI, 6.23 to 10.62; P < .0001) and more likely to be diagnosed at younger ages (OR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.86 to 0.89; P < .0001) compared with young African Americans in adjusted models. CONCLUSION Compared with AA individuals diagnosed with early-onset CRC, Nigerian individuals harbor distinct features of early-onset CRC. Additional investigation of the histopathologic and biologic heterogeneity of early-onset CRCs among Black individuals is critical for understanding racial disparities in susceptibility and outcomes, which may have implications for tailored early-onset CRC prevention, detection, and treatment strategies.
