Cancer, Mortality, and Acute Kidney Injury Among Hospitalized Patients with SARS-CoV-2 Infection

Abstract: Background: To evaluate COVID19 patients treated within our academic medical system to determine if history of malignancy, both in general and specifically in genitourinary oncology patients, is associated with adverse clinical outcomes, including AKI and mortality. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study among patients with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in a multi-hospital, academic medical institution in New York City. Outcomes included mortality, ICU admission and AKI among hospitalized patients… Show more

Based on the data, it also appeared that mechanical ventilation is an aggravating factor for AKI, which may be related to the worsening of the clinical conditions studied [OR 11.01, 95%CI: 10.29-11.77; p<0.01] (Figure 5).…”

“…Kidney involvement, including urinary abnormalities and changes in kidney function, is observed in approximately 75% of COVID-19 patients. AKI acts as a risk factor for hospital mortality in these patients 2,[28][29][30][31][32] . Therefore, this literature review examined the evolution of COVID-19 patients and the association between the disease and AKI.…”

“…Figura 2.

“…Several studies have found that hematological cancer and lung cancer were significantly associated with higher mortality (14)(15)(16). Infected patients with a history of genitourinary cancer did not have a higher risk of death compared to those without cancer (17). To date, few studies have investigated Omicron-variant infection in cancer patients, especially in tumors derived from the pancreatic and biliary systems, which is the leading cause of death worldwide.…”
