Cancer cell sensing and therapy using affinity tag-conjugated gold nanorods

Abstract: Through the developments in controlling the shape of gold nanoparticles, synthesis of gold nanorods (AuNRs) can be considered as a milestone discovery in the area of nanomaterial-based cancer treatments. Besides having tuneable absorption maxima at near infrared (NIR) range, AuNRs have superior absorption cross section at NIR frequencies compared with other gold nanoparticles. When this unique optical property is combined with the specificity against cancer cells used by affinity tag conjugations, AuNRs become… Show more

“…For instance, gold and silver particles are widely used in biomedical applications [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27] , especially for thiol linkers to selectively bind receptor proteins in targeted drug delivery application [28,29] . Therefore, if one can produce a metal shell, covering the polymer and sealing the capsules, the colloidosomes can be used for medical applications.…”

“…1 For instance, the extinction cross-section coefficients of AuNRs are more than double those of gold nanoshells (AuNSs) 2 , the first example of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) able to absorb in the NIR region. High absorption cross sections facilitate efficient energy absorption in the NIR, thus allowing equally efficient conversion of this absorbed energy to thermal energy.…”

“…[31][32][33][34][35][36][37] In this context, gold nanorods (Au NRs) have been receiving extensive attention, in large part owing to their strong extinction coefficient at longitudinal surface plasmon (LSP) resonance, which is dependent on their size, aspect ratio (AR) and refractive index of surrounding media. 39,[50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57] Those achievements have led to signicant advances in science and technology of LSPR sensors. 39,[50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57] Those achievements have led to signicant advances in science and technology of LSPR sensors.…”
