Canadian Groundwater Inventory: regional hydrogeological characterization of the south-central part of the Maritimes Basin

Abstract: The Maritimes Groundwater Initiative (MGWI) is a large, integrated, regional hydrogeological study focusing on a representative area of the Maritimes Basin in eastern Canada. The study area covers a land surface of 10 500 km2, of which 9 400 km2 are underlain by sedimentary rocks. This sedimentary bedrock is composed of a sequence of discontinuous strata of highly variable hydraulic properties, and is generally overlain by a thin layer of glacial till (mostly 4-8 m, but can reach 20mthick). Depending on the ar… Show more

“…Geophysical logs were obtained in 10 wells scattered throughout the region to obtain information on stratigraphy, water bearing fracture features, along with their individual flow rate. Geophysical logging operations included the use of caliper, natural gamma, electrical resistivity, acoustic televiewer and flowmeter under ambient as well as pumping conditions (Morin et al 2002;Rivard et al 2005bRivard et al , 2008. For the characterization of surficial deposits, slug and pumping tests were performed in sand units, and several permeameter and infiltrometer tests were conducted in various till units (Boisvert 2004).…”

“…Figure 2 presents a simplified version showing formations of most interest for hydrogeology, mainly because of their aquifer potential or significant extent in the area. Complete versions of the geological map and Table 3 are presented in Rivard et al (2005aRivard et al ( , 2008.…”
