On the one hand, business may be regarded as incompatible with authenticity, as it is arguably ruled largely by etiquette, norms, and conventions that leave little room to be one's true self (hindering role). On the other hand, business may be seen as promoting authenticity, as it is arguably based largely on creativity, initiative, and independence that provide opportunitie… Show more

“…This perception may be due to several reasons, such as assessing one’s characteristics, emotions, and experiences in an unbiased manner, showing integrity and openness to others, or acting in accordance with the unfeigned self (Kernis & Goldman, 2006; Lenton et al, 2014; Sheldon et al, 2012). Further, this perception can be relatively durable (in the form of trait; Kernis & Goldman, 2006; Lenton et al, 2016; Wood et al, 2008) or transient (in the form of state; Chen, 2019; Kokkoris & Sedikides, 2019; Lenton, Bruder, et al, 2013).…”

“…Adhering to specific (sometimes strict) principles of behaviour may leave little space for being one's true self (being authentic). However, in the opinion of business students surveyed by Kokkoris and Sedikides (2019), such a concern was not justified. International business, which is understood by Bartosik-Purgat (2010 as any kind of business activity undertaken by an enterprise (or individuals not being legal persons), which is connected with the sale or purchase (as well as being an intermediary in the process) of goods (or services) abroad, may be perceived as a challenge by managers.…”

“…Authentic leadership is defined as “a pattern of leader behavior that draws upon and promotes both positive psychological capacities and a positive ethical climate, to foster greater self‐awareness, an internalized moral perspective, balanced processing of information, and relational transparency” (Walumbwa et al., 2008, p. 94). This form of leadership has become increasingly popular over the past two decades as leadership scholars and practitioners, disillusioned by corporate scandals and high‐profile leadership lapses, have been attracted to this straightforward and transparent leadership approach that encourages greater self‐awareness and an internalized moral perspective to foster a strong ethical climate (Avolio & Gardner, 2005; Kokkoris & Sedikides, 2019; Luthans & Avolio, 2003). Authentic leaders trust their own emotions, motives, and abilities, enabling them to consider multiple perspectives and lessen bias in their processing of information (Walumbwa et al., 2008).…”
