“…Bog bilberries are common in the Siberian taiga and tundra biotopes. They are known and used as a food source by the indigenous peoples of Siberia, for example, the Yakuts/Sakha ( Borisova et al, 2018 ), Nenets ( Källman, 2002 ), Yupik ( Ainana and Zagrebin, 2014 ), Chukchi, Koryak and Kamchadal ( Bogoraz, 1909 ), as well as the general non-indigenous population of Siberia ( Shin et al, 2022 ). The berry picking has been (and still is) traditionally done by women and children.…”

“…In search engine analyses, researchers can examine temporal changes in people's interests for a search term and time period by using the "relative search volumes" (RSV) in GT, which are relative values (from 0 to 100) for a given time period, and the "impressions" scores for Yandex, which are absolute values (Stephens-Davidowitz and Varian, 2015;Shin et al, 2022a). Examples of this kind of study include topics such as temporal changes in cherry flowering phenology (Shin et al, 2022d), utilization of berries (Kotani et al, 2021;Shin et al, 2022a), demand for mushrooms (Diaz-Balteiro et al, 2023), appearance of insects (Takada, 2012), the COVID-19 pandemic (Mavragani and Gkillas, 2020;Amusa et al, 2022), and pollens that trigger seasonal allergies (Hall et al, 2020;Iinuma et al, 2020). GT provides search by country and region, whereas Yandex provides impressions scores for a variety of administrative units (continent, country, region, city, and Russian administrative wards).…”

“…For instance, the analysis of Twitter posts was useful for evaluating the spatiotemporal variation of the timing of leaf coloring in Japan (Shin et al, 2021b). Kotani et al (2021) and Shin et al (2022a) analyzed the time-series of Google Trends and/or Yandex statistics (a major search engine in Russia) 15 to assess the spatiotemporal characteristics of people's interest in the use of berries in Arctic and the Russian Far East regions, 10.3389/ffgc.2023.1106723 which the authors used as proxy data of ripening phenology. Likewise, people's interests in oil extracted from illipe nuts (Borneo tallow nut), which are seeds of Dipterocarpaceae species (Blicher-Mathiesen, 1994), may be useful as ground-truth information for ripening phenology in Sarawak, Malaysia Borneo.…”
