Can we mitigate the psychological impacts of social isolation using behavioural activation? Long-term results of the UK BASIL urgent public health COVID-19 pilot randomised controlled trial and living systematic review

Abstract: BackgroundBehavioural and cognitive interventions remain credible approaches in addressing loneliness and depression. There was a need to rapidly generate and assimilate trial-based data during COVID-19.ObjectivesWe undertook a parallel pilot RCT of behavioural activation (a brief behavioural intervention) for depression and loneliness (Behavioural Activation in Social Isolation, the BASIL-C19 trialISRCTN94091479). We also assimilate these data in a living systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42021298788) of cogniti… Show more

“…A meta-analysis found that BA significantly reduced depressive symptoms in older adults in the community, but recommended further high-quality trials of BA for older adults with multiple LTCs are needed [11]. Whilst there is evidence demonstrating the clinical benefit of brief psychological interventions (including BA) for depression in the short term [16], the clinical and cost effectiveness of BA for older adults with multiple LTCs over the short and longer-term needs to be evaluated in a fully powered, randomised controlled trial (RCT), specifically evaluating both physical functioning and depression in older adults with LTCs.…”
