Can Vestibular Stimulation be Used to Treat Obesity?

Abstract: It is hypothesized that repeated, non‐invasive stimulation of the vestibular (balance) system, via a small electrical current to the skin behind the ears, will cause the brain centers that control energy homeostasis to shift the body toward a leaner physique. This is because these centers integrate multiple inputs to, in effect, fix a set‐point for body fat, which though difficult to alter is not immutable. They will interpret repeated stimulation of the parts of the vestibular system that detect acceleration … Show more

“…Collectively, the present results suggest that the vestibular system dysregulation influences body fat elevated by HSHFD in mice. Homeostasis is maintained in physiological and pathological states through the optimal use of energy regulated by various organs, such as the nervous system [31,32]. The vestibular system may be related to the centers that integrate multiple inputs for the regulation of a set-point for body fat.…”

“…6 Vestibular dysregulation was reported to influence obesity and vestibular stimulation was reported to alter the set point of fat. 7,8 Although there are multiple methods available to stimulate the vestibular system, optimal stimulation is required to avail maximum beneficial effects. Electrical vestibular stimulation is a simple and non-invasive method and can control the strength of the stimulation offered.…”
