Organic matter (OM) properties, assessed with measurements of dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC), surface-active DOC (SAS), and DOC normalized surfactant activity (NSA), have been under scrutiny during several recent and notable phenomena along the Adriatic Sea coast in Croatia. These phenomena were (1) massive invasive ctenophore blooms during the summer of 2020 and red tide occurrences in spring 2021 in the northern Adriatic, (2) the formation of the gelatinous macroaggregates in the coastal waters of the central Adriatic during the summer of 2021, and (3) intense autotrophic activity within the water column of the highly stratified and eutrophic marine system of Rogoznica Lake. All these events encompassed single-species plankton blooms characterized by a remarkable increase of OM (up to 320 mg L-1 of DOC and POC) with different surface-active properties (up to 15 mg L-1 of SAS) appearing in the otherwise oligotrophic Adriatic Sea. The NSA, in addition to voltammetric curves with well-defined desorption waves, is a good indicator of the presence of a different type of OM, which can be considered a possible tracer for certain processes in the marine environment. Based on our measurements, a rough threshold value for the OM hydrophobicity-reactivity of NSA = 0.083 is proposed. OM with a value above this threshold is more hydrophobic, as in the case of red tides and gelatinous zooplankton blooms with an average NSA between 0.13 and 0.16. OM with a value below this threshold indicates the presence of more hydrophilic substances such as pollen and OM produced by purple sulfur bacteria.

Seasonal changes of the lipid and fatty acid composition of Pleurobrachia pileus investigated monthly from March 2012 to February 2013. Average total lipid content was determined as percentage (%) and per individual (mg ind-1). It was highest in February (1.48 %; 3.55 mg ind-1). However, it was proportionally the lowest in April (0.40 %), and per individual in August (0.33 mg ind-1). Major fatty acids of P. pileus were identified as 16:0, 14:0, 11:1 n-9c, 20:5 n-3, and 22:6 n-3. P. pileus had on average 27.27 % ∑SFA, 25.04 % ∑MUFA and 47.63 % ∑PUFA content. EPA and DHA were the major fatty acids from PUFA. Seasonal changes of DHA were more obvious than EPA (p<0.05). Herbivore calanoid zooplankton trophic markers; 20:1 n-9 and DHA/EPA and herbivory trophic markers; EPA and DHA content were high in P. pileus fatty acids. It showed that herbivory fatty acids were taken by feeding from herbivory zooplankton and phytoplankton. Diet was an important factor in seasonal fatty acid changes of P. pileus. In addition, we revealed that P. pileus has a rich lipid content and fatty acid composition and plays an important role in the Southeastern Black Sea ecosystem functionalities between herbivory and carnivory species.

The present study described the abundance, body length, gonadal development stage and feeding behavior of Parasagitta setosa in the southern Black Sea, Turkey. The study was conducted twice a month from January 2008 to December 2008 by vertical hauls with a 112 μm mesh size plankton net in the 0 – 50 m column of a neritic area of Sinop. During the study period, the abundance values of this species were generally low, varying between 10 and 980 ind.m-2. P. setosa occurred in small numbers from December to July, but became numerous from August onwards. 1580 animals 0.53 to 12.8 mm in size were dissected. Food items found in the guts of 53 individuals (3.4%) indicated that the diet of this species is primarily composed of copepods (54.73%). The food-containing ratio and number of prey items per chaetognath were low values. A greater number of individuals possessed a size class of 1 – 1.99 mm and 2 – 2.99 mm; these two length classes combined comprised 62% of the total sample. Four different development stages were determined by using ovary and seminal vesicle development. Stage I (immature) dominated the population of P. setosa.
