Can Teaching Research Methodology Influence Students' Attitude toward Science? Cohort Study and Nonrandomized Trial in a Single Medical School

Abstract: Medical students have positive attitudes toward science and scientific method in medicine. Attendance of a course on research methodology had positive short-term effect on students' attitudes toward science. This positive effect should be maintained by vertical integration of the course in the medical curriculum.

“…An alternative and/or complementary approach would be to enhance the training of professional applied statisticians and to ensure that all research involves knowledgeable statisticians or equivalent methodologists. At a minimum, all scientists should be well trained in understanding evidence and statistics and being in a position to recognize that they may need help from a methodologist expert (Marusic and Marusic, 2003;Moharari et al, 2009;Vujaklija et al, 2010).…”

“…The factors leading to the emergence of this interest are unknown. However, the influence of a scientific methodology course 3 and the opportunity to participate in scientific research during the entire degree tend to produce more researchers than limited participation during part of the higher education course. 4 Based on these considerations, this study has the purpose of describing the interest in research among medical students at a federal university in Brazil, aimed at enhancing the educational planning of scientific methodology as subject and discussing its importance to medical training.…”

“…Unfortunately, there has been an alarming decline in the number of prospective physicians-scientists [3,[5][6][7][8][9]21]. Proposed measures to overcome this problem have been carried out and discussed in literature [3,7,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. One influential measure to encourage a generation of physician-scientists is early exposure to research during undergraduate education [15,17,20,21].…”

“…After 3 years of medical school, students would spend at least 2 years in a combined didactic and mentored clinical research training program and then complete medical school. Students could elect to pursue more prolonged clinical research training toward a combined PhD and MD [12,14]. Sometimes, it is a big opportunity as in Norway where, Medical Student Research Program is a national education and grant scheme for medical students who wish to carry out research in parallel with their studies [20].…”
