Can spicules be detected at disc centre in broad-band Ca ii H filter imaging data?

Abstract: Context.Recently, a possible identification of type II spicules in broad-band (full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of ∼0.3 nm) filter imaging data in Ca ii H on the solar disc was reported. Aims. We estimate the formation height range contributing to broad-band and narrow-band filter imaging data in Ca ii H to investigate whether spicules can be detected in such observations at the centre of the solar disc.Methods. We applied spectral filters of FWHMs from 0.03 nm to 1 nm to observed Ca ii H line profiles to sim… Show more

“…6 of Eiroa et al 2013), a fact that could potentially contribute to enhancing the relationship between solar physics and the physics of other stars. In the end, such observations may help to resolve a long-standing puzzle in solar physics concerning the very existence of an actual gas temperature inversion at 500 km height and concerning whether this is occurring in the Quiet Sun or in active regions on the Sun (e.g., Leenaarts et al 2011;Beck et al 2013). Theoretical models have hitherto been inconclusive.…”

“…A&A 560, A50 (2013) Besides long-slit spectrograms, narrowband filtergrams are often used to study the chromospheric dynamics. This technique provides large area coverage (compared to slit spectra) and high temporal resolution, but a certain mixing of photospheric and chromospheric contributions is unavoidable, as soon as the spectral bandwidth is larger than 0.5 Å (Beck et al 2013a). From a Ca II K filtergram sequence of an inter-network region with a width of 0.3 Å, Wöger et al (2006) describe bright grains with sizes of about 2 and a timescale of 53 s. The same time scale was found by Tritschler et al (2007).…”
