RESUMOEste estudo objetivou avaliar a composição florística do banco de sementes no solo e na serapilheira, em diferentes estágios de regeneração natural em área de Caatinga. O trabalho foi desenvolvido na Fazenda Cachoeira de São Porfírio, no município de Várzea, PB, onde foram selecionadas quatro áreas, uma com pastagem nativa e três com vegetação em diferentes estágios de regeneração natural. Para amostragem do banco de sementes no solo foram coletadas, aleatoriamente, 144 amostras e a metodologia utilizada para determinar a composição florística das espécies do banco de sementes foi a de emergência de plântulas e reconhecimento em herbário. Para avaliar a diversidade florística foi estimado o índice de diversidade de ShannonWeaver (H'), equabilidade pelo Índice Pielou (J') e similaridade de Jaccard (Sj). A composição florística do banco de sementes das áreas estudadas está representada por 94 espécies pertencentes a 71 gêneros e distribuídas em 29 famílias botânicas. O banco de sementes das quatro áreas estudadas é composto, predominantemente, por espécies de hábito herbáceo e a composição florística é variável de acordo com o estágio de regeneração natural, sendo maior nos estágios mais avançados. The study was conducted at Farm Cachoeira of São Porfírio, in the municipality of Várzea, PB, where four were select areas, one with native pasture and three in different stages of natural regeneration. For sampling the seed bank were randomly collected 144 samples, and the methodology used to determine the floristic species composition of the seed bank was of seedling emergence and recognition in herbarium. To assess the floristic diversity were estimated index of diversity Shannon-Weaver (H '), the index Pielou evenness (J '), and similarity of Jaccard (Sj). The floristic composition of the seed bank of the study area is represented by 94 species belonging to 71 genera, distributed in 29 botanical families. The seed bank of the four study areas consists predominantly of species of herbaceous habit and floristic composition varies according to the stage of natural regeneration, being higher in more advanced stages.

Abstract:In tropical dry forests, the dynamics of herbaceous populations is strongly influenced by seasonal and annual variation in total rainfall. Moreover, the present and past events of climatic anomalies (e.g. severe drought years and erratic rain before the growth season) may cause drastic reductions in population size, leading to the temporal disappearance of some species. Therefore, this three-year study aimed to assess the dynamics of Delilia biflora (Asteraceae), Commelina obliqua (Commelinaceae), Phaseolus peduncularis (Fabaceae) and Euphorbia heterophylla (Euphorbiaceae). The study was conducted in an area of tropical dry forest known as Caatinga, situated in the experimental station of the Pernambuco Agronomic Institute (IPA), in Caruaru, Pernambuco, Brazil. The Caatinga has a semiarid climate with strong seasonal and annual variation in total precipitation. During this study, there was a climatic anomaly event called the 2006 drought, and also erratic rains in the dry season. The birth, death and survival of plants were evaluated monthly using 105 plots (1 × 1 m). Differences in density between years and seasons were evaluated using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The explanatory power of present and past precipitation on density was evaluated using the General Linear Model. In this study, we present the first record of Euphorbia heterophylla in the studied area. The studied populations were larger during the rainy seasons and in wet years, and were drastically reduced in the driest year and dry seasons. Commelina obliqua was the least sensitive to variation in total rainfall. Regarding the variation in density, all four species were present during all three years. Birth rates were higher during the rainy season, and death rates were higher in the dry season. Sporadic rain in the dry season caused pronounced seedling recruitment followed by death, and had a strong impact on the dynamics of D. biflora, E. heterophylla and P. peduncularis. The precipitation of the current year explained between 3 % -18 % of the inter-annual density variation, and the explanatory power of the previous year precipitation on the density of populations ranged from 32 % to 67 %. Therefore, climatic events of the past also have a significant consequence over the four populations. In conclusion, drastic reduction in total precipitation between years may be considered as a predictive parameter for herbaceous plants population size (in the present and future time) in a Northeastern Brazilian tropical dry forest area. Plant community responses to global environmental change focus primarily on aboveground vegetation; however, the important role of the seed bank is frequently neglected. Specifically, the direct and indirect effects of changes in temperature and precipitation on seed banks remain poorly understood, yet seed banks provide a vital source of ecosystem resilience to global environmental change. We used a structural equation model to explore the direct and indirect effects of temperature, precipitation, and other biotic and abiotic factors on soil seed bank community composition using 1,026 soil seed bank samples from 57 sites along an elevation gradient that served as a space‐for‐time substitution for changing climate in the Tibetan Plateau. Seed bank richness was negatively correlated with both precipitation and temperature, but neither climate factor affected seed bank density. Temperature was also negatively correlated with vegetation species richness, which was positively correlated with seed bank richness and density. Both precipitation and temperature were positively correlated with soil total N, and total N was negatively correlated with vegetation richness. Both precipitation and temperature were negatively correlated with soil pH, and soil pH was negatively correlated with vegetation richness, but positively correlated with seed bank richness and density. Increasing precipitation and temperature would decrease seed bank diversity through direct effects as well as indirectly by decreasing vegetation diversity. Soil pH and total N emerged as the most important soil abiotic factors for seed bank diversity. Increasing precipitation and temperature under climate change may increase the extinction risk of some species in the seed bank by altering bet‐hedging and risk‐spreading strategies, which will degrade natural restoration ability and ultimately ecosystem resilience. This research is important because it identifies the potential underlying mechanistic basis of climate change impacts on seed banks through effects of aboveground vegetation and belowground biotic and abiotic factors.
