Can people with asymptomatic or pre-symptomatic COVID-19 infect others: a systematic review of primary data

Abstract: Asymptomatic but infectious people have been reported in many infectious diseases. Asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic carriers would be a hidden reservoir of COVID-19. AimThis review identifies primary empirical evidence about the ability of asymptomatic carriers to infect others with COVID-19 pandemic and reflects on the implications for control measures. MethodsA systematic review is followed by a narrative report and commentary inclusion criteria were: studies reporting primary data on asymptomatic or presymp… Show more

“…Asymptomatic cases with COVID-19 are of great concern. They contribute to the spread of SARS-CoV-2, 23 with similar transmission rates as symptomatic patients, 24 while the virus replicates in their lower respiratory tract resulting in radiological evidence of infection. 25 Reports show that asymptomatic cases with normal chest CT have shorter periods from diagnosis to being SARS-CoV-2 negative than asymptomatic cases with positive chest CT. 26 COVID-19 should be considered among cases with CT abnormalities even when there are no other symptoms.…”

“…It is known that an infected person begins to shed significant amounts of virus from 3 days before of becoming symptomatic, with the maximum peak of viral load found throughout the 24 hours prior to clinical manifestations [11]. In asymptomatic people, it is estimated that the contagion period would be about 8 to 15 days after infection [12,13].…”

“…Development of these diagnostic tools is a result of a partnership between Mologic (UK), a biotechnology company committed to developing tests for low resource settings at cost of goods in line with Global Access Policy 8 Our aim is to develop COVID-19 RDTs to meet the WHO provisional target product profiles (TPP) for point-of-need tests for antigen and antibody assays 9 . Antigen assays, could be used for the rapid triage of patients with presumptive COVID-19, to detect asymptomatic or presymptomatic carriers and mild infections for isolation 10 .…”
