“…This goes hand in hand with the observed increase in 2-oxogluterate, which is produced via GGT action induced after shifting C. reinhardtii cells into low CO 2 conditions (112), whereas glutamate is decreased because it is steadily consumed. Notably arginine accumulates under stress in A. thaliana (118,119) and is considered an important intermediate for nitrogen storage (120). In line our data suggest that arginine biosynthesis, as well as photorespiration, is characteristic for cells actively performing photosynthesis.…”

“…Although there was no significant difference in proline content between drought and control conditions, ornithine accumulated significantly in both poplar species. In SlNAGS1 ( Solanum lycopersicum N‐acetyl‐L‐glutamate synthase gene)‐overexpressing plants, ornithine accumulation is coupled to the production of osmoprotectants that enhance stress tolerance (Kalamaki et al ). The observed accumulation of ornithine in drought‐stressed poplar plants suggests that ornithine might be closely associated with plant drought tolerance.…”

“…Genetically engineered plants provide evidence that enhanced trehalose metabolism can positively regulate stress tolerance (Avonce et al, 2004;Suzuki et al, 2008;Li et al, 2011). Orn is the intermediate compound in the Arg biosynthetic pathway, where the pathway diverges to the production of compounds, such as Pro and polyamines, which serve osmoprotective functions and improve stress tolerance (Kalamaki et al, 2009). Glycinebetaine is synthesized either by oxidation of choline or by N-methylation of Gly (Chen and Murata, 2002).…”
