“…Andean Compound is a very complex mixture of humic substances generated by natural millenary decomposition of vegetal material and is originated as an endemic natural product from the Andes Mountains. Andean Compound and its major active principle—fulvic acid—emerge as novel nutraceutical with potential uses against neurodegenerative brain disorders (Carrasco-Gallardo et al, 2012a). This natural compound is a potent anti-inflammatory substance, and a very safe dietary supplement (Carrasco-Gallardo et al, 2012b).…”

“…This natural endemic phytocomplex, resulting from fossilized plants degradation through the years, was discovered in 2008 in the North of Chile and was named Andean Compound (41). In vitro assays and cell culture data show that Andean Compound and FA strongly interferes with tau aggregation, and interestingly an increase in neurites outgrowth has been observed in neural cell cultures exposed to this natural compound (42). In addition, a placebo-controlled pilot clinical study suggests that consumption of a nutraceutical formulation of Andean Compound plus B complex vitamins may produce stabilization of cognitive function in AD patients at a 24-weeks as determined with Global deterioration scale (GDS) and Neuropsychiatric inventory (NPI) measurements (42) (Figure 2).…”

“…These studies and others suggest microglia as a promising therapeutic target for AD [36]. Another approach being investigated by researchers at the International Center for Biomedicine in Chile targets brain inflammation through the use of a nutraceutical that appears to protect neurons by disaggregating human pathological tau protein filaments [37,38].…”
