Can High-Speed Rail Help Achieve Urban Green Development? From a Spatial Perspective

Abstract: As a convenient means of transportation, high-speed rail (HSR) plays an important role in green development. In the context of the rapid development of China’s HSR, this study selects the SBM-DDF-SML model to construct the green total factor productivity (GTFP) index to measure urban green development; moreover, it empirically tests the impact of the opening of the HSR on GTFP using the spatial difference-in-differences (SDID) model. The results show that the opening of the HSR could significantly promote GTFP… Show more

“…In China, the challenge is more related to air pollution caused by burning coal for energy. This has led to increased respiratory illnesses among citizens living near railway lines and an overall decrease in air quality (Liu et al, 2022). Additionally, China's rapid economic growth has increased demand for railway transportation, leading to overcrowding on existing lines and further exacerbating air pollution issues (The World Bank, 2014).…”

“…First, the informatization construction, innovation base construction, and policy support along the HSR can all improve the ecological environment and conditions for urban innovation, providing more stable and long-term support for urban innovation [36]. Next, the opening of an HSR can promote green exchanges and cooperation between cities, strengthen the interactions and connections between cities, and promote the dissemination and exchange of green technologies, products, and services [37]. Due to the convenience and efficiency of the HSR, urban residents can more easily carry out cross-city green exchanges and cooperation and accelerate the promotion and application of green technologies and products [38].…”
