Can Experiences of Authentic Scientific Inquiry Result in Transformational Learning?

Abstract: This work examines the experience of secondary school students involved in authentic science inquiry (ASI) at the Canadian Light Source. We suggest this experience is a transformational learning experience for participants. Using evidence from surveys and interviews from a total of 119 high school students, 23 teachers, and 18 scientists participating in the Students on the Beamline project during 2007–2010, we employ a transformational learning theory framework (Cranton, 2002; Mezirow, 1997a, b; Imel, 1998) i… Show more

“…This is because computation skills are important, and students should be familiar with the technology before being assessed on it. This research is also similar to a study by [34] exploring perceptions of mobile science laboratories as a tool for intervention. The findings show positive perceptions which are align with the study by [34], claiming that the students' experience was able to change negative to positive perceptions and motivated students to pursue science.…”

“…Walker and Molnar (2013) asked a similar question regarding the ability of secondary students to experience transformative learning. “Our investigation suggests that transformational learning can occur through such learning activity highlighted, for example, by changes in student perceptions,” said Walker and Molnar (2013, p. 229).…”

“…An interesting aspect of the transformation process was how the students emphasized personal change more so than social change. Students revealed how they shifted from old ways of thinking to a new understanding and appreciation of their personal abilities, supporting the belief that transformative learning can occur through learning activities that highlight changes in student perceptions (Walker & Molnar, 2013). Transforming points of view and transforming habits of mind (mentioned in due course) are central to how Mezirow (2000) conceives learning.…”
