Can evolutionary thinking shed light on gender diversity?

Abstract: SUMMARYIssues of sexual reproduction lie at the core of evolutionary thinking, which often places an emphasis on how individuals attempt to maximise the number of successful offspring that they can produce. At first sight, it may therefore appear that individuals who opt for gender-affirming medical interventions are acting in ways that are evolutionarily disadvantageous. However, there are persuasive hypotheses that might make sense of such choices in evolutionary terms and we explore these here. It is premat… Show more

“…The quantum Darwinism theory clarifies the nature of quantum-classical correspondence and its postulates have been confirmed in a recent experiment [77]. These findings correlate with the works that have established a link between Darwinian natural selection, evolution and gender diversity [78][79][80].…”

“…It could also be argued that the current socio-political climate around gender has contributed to an environment where distress about gender is intensified. We would hypothesise that young people be less distressed about gender in a society which was more open, diverse and accepting of gender diversity (Wren et al, 2019).…”

“…There have been several investigations, debates, and discussions on whether homosexuality should be acceptable in society. According to Wren, Launer, Reiss, Swanepoel, and Music (2019), few people are inclined to believe that sexual preference is hereditary, determined by pre-birth hormonal impacts or other physical or mind dissimilarities to have characteristics that are fit for making them vulnerable to biological factors that can invigorate the craving for homosexuality. In light of the acknowledgement that homosexuality is immense and frequently twisted because of cultural predisposition, generalisation and shame, the American Psychiatric Association submits that the issue of gay or same-sex inclination is either communicated in real life, desire, or character.…”
