Can Biological Activity be Maintained at Ultra-High Dilution? An Overview of Homeopathy, Evidence, and Bayesian Philosophy

Abstract: Forty percent of general practitioners in the Netherlands practice homeopathy. With over 100 homeopathic medical schools, homeopathy is practiced in India along with conventional Western medicine in government clinics. In Britain, 42% of general practitioners refer patients to homeopaths. Two recent meta-analyses of homeopathy both indicate that there is enough evidence to show that homeopathy has added effects over placebo. Against this evidence is a backdrop of considerable scientific scepticism. Homeopathic… Show more

“…In theory, the higher the dilution, the stronger the effect. The therapeutic effect has been explained to result from a type of “memory” of the original substance retained in the water molecules of the dilution [33]. An attempt to test this hypothesis is represented by Jacques Beneviste, who in 1988 published a controversial paper in Nature reporting effects of highly diluted anti-IgE on degranulation of basophil cells.…”

“…Another possible solution is to move away from randomization and frequentist statistics to the use of Bayesian methods (Senn, 1997;Vallance, 1998) in large observational data sets where outcome and most relevant prognostic variables have been recorded (Senn, 1997). However, most researchers wish to maintain the ideal of randomization, either with or without blinding.…”
