Can an instruction video or palpation aid improve the effectiveness of breast self-examination in detecting tumors? An experimental study

Abstract: Using an instruction video or palpation aid did not improve the effectiveness of breast examination in detecting tumors--a finding which supports results from large randomized studies. It is difficult to understand why BSE is still promoted by various groups.

“…Training can result in an increase in the regular performance of BSE (20)(21)(22). The use of video and in-person training regarding BSE can have a lasting and profound impact on women's learning of this method (25). Regarding the importance of preventive programs, self-care interventions for early detection of diseases have a special place in such programs, and the high incidence and prevalence of breast cancer in human communities, especially in Iran, indicate that using this type of intervention, given its benefits compared with the relatively low costs, is affordable and should attract the attention of the national health system.…”

“…Furthermore, some studies suggest that most women lack the confidence both in their BSE skill and interpretation of results [3]. Although the role of BSE in the reduction of breast-cancer mortality has been controversial [4][5], we do not have evidence on the effect of BSE in developing countries in which the population has more limited breast cancer awareness and in which breast cancer are usually discovered in the late-stage [6]. Despite the fact that breast cancer screening recommendations are in flux, BSE remains important for breast cancer diagnosis [7].…”
