Camping climate resources: the camping climate index in the United States

Abstract: Camping is the largest sub-sector of outdoor tourism, is growing in popularity, and is increasingly accessible to a diverse population of new campers. An outdoor accommodation and form of recreation, camping is especially susceptible to extreme weather and climate change. Though, camping research remains underrepresented in the tourism and tourism climatology literatures. Accordingly, this study quantifies seasonal camping climate resources for the 48 contiguous United States and its nine climate regions from … Show more

“…As the first known study to quantify the distribution and redistribution of climate resources for camping and related naturebased tourism more broadly, this paper has established that observed climate change has already altered climate resources, creating both risks and opportunities. The results are broadly consistent with regional tourism climatology studies using indices conducted in North America [29,54,70], Europe [7,71], Australia [72,73], China [74,75], the Mediter-ranean [76,77], and South Africa [78]. Nature-based tourism activities are very sensitive to the weather; thus, the changing climatic conditions may very well lead to changes in tourism demand patterns as has already been observed by Monahan et al [45] in US national parks.…”

“…Therefore, we use the Baidu index of ''emergency'' to capture the degree of urgency of the public in responding to climate risks; finally, meteorological hazards may interfere with transportation systems, and the public will pay attention to flights, trains, and other dynamics after perceiving the risk of meteorological hazards, For example, before the landing of Typhoon Niburt, the term ''stopping transportation'' was used the topics of ''stopping transportation'' and ''stopping sales'' became hot topics (S. Y. Ma et al, 2021). Therefore, in this paper, we chose the keywords ''train suspension'' and ''ticket refund'' etc.to measure the consequences of climate risk.…”
