“…At the type section it originally included in its lower part limestone and shale of Middle Cambrian age, which probably constitute the upper part of the Gros Venire formation as that formation was defined by Blackwelder (1918), and limestone of Late Cambrian age in its upper part. Inasmuch as the Gallatin limestone, in its restricted sense, contains only strata of Late Cambrian age and is therefore not completely representative of the type Gallatin as originally defined, Deiss (1938Deiss ( , p. 1104 applied the term Boysen formation for the l Tpper Cambrian rocks in Wind River Canyon. That name, although extended into the Gros Yeiitre Range by Foster (1947Foster ( , p. 1547, has not gained wide acceptance.…”

“…The Middle Cambrian to Lower Ordovician stratigraphy of Montana and Wyoming has been studied for more than 100 years and given a plethora of lithostratigraphic names (Peale, 1890, 1893; Blackwelder, 1918; Deiss, 1936, 1938; Dorf & Lochman, 1940; Mills, 1956; Goodwin, 1961; Martin et al ., 1980). Two of the more frequently applied formation names for the uppermost Cambrian and basal Ordovician strata in this succession are the Gallatin Formation and Snowy Range Formation.…”

“…The name Boysen Lirnestone has been used by some stratigraphers (Deiss, 1938(Deiss, , p. 1104vVanless, Belknap, and Foster, 1955, p. 13-14) in parts of western Wyoming to replace the older term Gallatin because an adequate type section for the Gallatin had not been designated. The writers feel, however, that this reason is not sufficient for changing a name tha:t has both precedence -and wide usage in western Wyoming and adjacent parts of Idaho.…”
