Cambios, inclusión y propuestas respecto al vocabulario relativo a la discapacidad

Abstract

For years, people with disabilities have felt hurt by the terms used to refer to them. The aim of this research is to find out whether there has been a change in the vocabulary employed and to collect information about the words with which people from this group feel identified. To this end, the experiences, preferences and proposals of 400 people with disabilities living in Spain and from two different periods —one of them, the present— were collected by means of a questionnaire consisting of open and closed questions. The results show that the treatment has improved since the year 2000, but they also reveal new inappropriate terms and a common feeling that there is still a long way to go. Durante años, las personas que presentan discapacidad se han sentido heridas a causa de los vocablos con que se las designaba. El objetivo de esta investigación es conocer si existe un cambio con respecto al vocabulario empleado y recoger aquellas voces con las que estas personas se sienten identificadas. Para ello, se han recabado las experiencias, las preferencias y las propuestas de 400 personas con discapacidad —residentes en España— de dos épocas distintas —una de ellas, la actual— a través de un cuestionario conformado por preguntas abiertas y cerradas. Los resultados reflejan que existe un mejor trato a partir del año 2000 y, sin embargo, muestran nuevos vocablos inadecuados y un sentimiento común de que todavía queda mucho camino por recorrer.
