Camber measurement system in a hot rolling mill

Abstract: Camber is one of the most significant defects in the first stages of hot rolling of steel plates. This kind of defect may cause the clogging of finishing mills, but it is also the visible effect of alterations in the process. In this paper we describe the design and implementation of a computer vision system for real-time measurement of camber in a hot rolling mill. Our goal is to provide valuable feedback information to improve AGC operation. As ground truth values are almost impossible to obtain, we have ana… Show more

“…8 Nowadays, due to simple, robust, reliable, and cheap computer-vision technology, several systems are beginning to employ vision technologies to measure exact camber value. 4,7 However, current systems only measure the whole camber for the slab or bar, though the measurement of the head/tail camber is important in the endless hot rolling process.…”

“…[4][5][6][7][8] Though they developed camber-measurement systems, which try to reduce camber by unevenness compensation, there are only a few systems that measure camber in real time. Most of them estimate the camber value through indirect measures provided by bar wedge gauges, width gauges, or other similar sensors.…”

“…20) A machine vision approach was adopted for on-line camber measurement. [21][22][23] In this simulator, although it is not an easy task to apply the above methods or its variant to real plant, the necessary information including curvature and side-slipping can be easily obtained based on the bar node information exported from the FEM simulator.…”

“…Several methods can be used to obtain this information. 8,[13][14][15][20][21][22][23] The plate curvature profile along the plate length direction was represented as an n-th order polynomial based on the measurement from three off-center meters.…”

“…Measurement is conducted using machine vision. [12][13][14] The measurement devices consist of CCD cameras that take photographs of a fixed region of the run-out table. An image processing algorithm is used to extract the centerline of the bar from the photographs.…”
