Camber Angle Inspection for Vehicle Wheel Alignments

Abstract: This paper introduces an alternative approach to the camber angle measurement for vehicle wheel alignment. Instead of current commercial approaches that apply computation vision techniques, this study aims at realizing a micro-control-unit (MCU)-based camber inspection system with a 3-axis accelerometer. We analyze the precision of the inspection system for the axis misalignments of the accelerometer. The results show that the axes of the accelerometer can be aligned to the axes of the camber inspection system… Show more

“…He verified the developed method by comparing the wheel alignment results with the results from the existing method. Jieh-Shian Young has proposed a micro control unit (MCU)-based camber inspection system with a 3-axis accelerometer [10]. He emphasizes the fact that the axes of the accelerometer can be misaligned to the axes of the camber inspection system and, therefore, in his study he proposes the calibration method to amend these axis misalignments.…”

“…When the wheel leans towards the chassis of the car, the wheels are said to possess a negative camber configuration, and vice versa. Camber angle is set to balance traction and wear and is mainly associated with the premature uneven wear of tire as the surface of the tire tread is not entirely in contact with the road due to the negatively or positively tilted angle when viewed from the centerline of a wheel [1]. In another words, the force transferred from the adhesive contact patch area between the tire and the surface of the road affects the natural path of a four-wheeled automotive carcass in the contact area when camber is introduced.…”

“…There are also vehicle dynamics and adjustments of the wheel characteristic angles needed for this purpose [2]. Wheel camber angles affect the steering stability and controllability of the vehicle; hence, the alignment of the wheels and the vehicle control system poses a significant ENGINEERING MODELLING 35 (2022) 2, 65-89 problem.…”
