Calvinism, Literacy, and Reading Culture in the Early Modern Northern Netherlands: Towards a Reassessment

Abstract: ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Im Gesamtbild der niederländischen Kultur des 17. Jahrhunderts sind Calvinismus und Lesekultur eng miteinander verknüpft. Der Protestantismus, insbesondere die Reformierte Kirche, gilt als wortbezogene und der Bibellektüre verpflichtete Konfession, die den hohen Grad der Alphabetisierung in der niederländischen Republik hervorgebracht habe. “…The synod of 1574 called for schools in every village, and the synod of 1618 mandated that municipalities provide a grant to pay for free schools including for poor children (Boekholt and de Booy :19; De Vries and Van der Woude :170). These numerous church efforts translated into the widespread provision of schools but a school system that was not hierarchically organized on a national basis (Frijhoff ; Roberts :99 and the citations within). The result was a functioning but unevenly funded school system that produced adult literacy for grooms and brides in Amsterdam of 46.5% by 1583, 57% around 1700, and rising to 67% for all of the Netherlands by 1816 (Cipolla ; Deursen ; De Vries and Van der Woude ; Graff ; Hart ; Roberts ).…”
