Single crystals of ,M(BrO,), . 9 H,O (M = rare earth) are biaxial and therefore cannot have the hexagonal structure that was accepted. Studies of Raman and infrared spectra, of specific heat, of pyroelectricity, and of dielectric constant versus temperature point to a space group C cm2, for the low-temperature phase of the crystals and shovs that a t 66 K an order-disorder transition takes place which is likely due to a change of orientation of the BrOb ions.Les monocristaux de RI(BrO,), . 9 H,O (M = terre rare) ktant biaxes ne peuvent avoir la structure hexagonale admise jusqu'b prksent.
