Food storage has been important since the dawn of agriculture and human settlement. Insect pests cause major losses to food grains during storage and production. Essential oils are good alternatives for chemical insecticides for the management of storage pests. Red bottlebrush, Callistemon lanceolatus, is a flowering plant of the Myrtaceae family. This research work aimed to extract the oil from bottlebrush leaves, and chemically characterize and assess their repellent and insecticidal properties against the cowpea seed beetle, Callasobruchus maculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne (F.) (Coleoptera: Ptinidae), and red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst.) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), for the first time. The essential oil yielded by hydro-distillation of bottlebrush leaves was 1.02 ± 0.01%. GC-MS analysis determined the chemical composition of the volatile oil comprised 1,8-cineole (19.17%), α-terpineol (11.51%), α-pinene (10.28%), and α-Phellandrene (9.55%). The C. lanceolatus leaf oil showed potent repellence, contact toxicity, and fumigation toxic effects. In the contact toxicity assay, at 24 h, the LC50 values were 1.35, 0.52, and 0.58 mg/cm2 for the red flour beetle, cigarette beetle, and cowpea seed beetle, respectively. Likewise, in the fumigation assay observed after 24 h, LC50 values of 22.60, 5.48, and 1.43 µL/L air were demonstrated for the red flour beetle, cigarette beetle, and cowpea seed beetle, respectively. Additionally, there was no significance found by a phytotoxicity assay when the paddy seeds were exposed to C. lanceolatus oil. The results show that the volatile oils from red bottlebrush leaves have the potential to be applied as a biopesticide. Therefore, C. lanceolatus leaf oil can be utilized as a bio-insecticide to control stored product insects.

The current study was performed to investigate the hepatoprotective potential of Callistemon viminalis (AECV) on paracetamol –induced liver damage in male rats. Twenty-four male Wister rats (150–200 gm) were divided into 4 groups (6 animals each). Paracetamol was given at a dose of 2g/kg once daily for one week to induce liver injury, while AECV was administered via oral gavage at a dose of 200mg/kg B.W. for 4 weeks. Silymarin was given orally as reference hepatoprotective drug at a dose of 100mg/kg B.W. Liver enzymes such as ALT, AST, ALP, and total bilirubin were used to determine the level of hepatic injury recovery. SOD and CAT were measured as antioxidant enzymes. Both AECV and silymarin were successful in preventing the liver damage caused by paracetamol in male rats. The extract's hepatoprotective properties were demonstrated by a significant decrease in the blood enzymes ALT, AST, ALP, and TB and an increase in the antioxidant enzymes SOD and CAT.

This work described a comprehensive study to estimate chemical constituents of essential oils (EOs) extracted from different parts of the Callistemon citrinus viz: fruits, leaves and aerial part. The EOs were characterized using physicochemical parameters, and GC‐FID/MS. It was observed that among different parts, aerial part has the highest oil yield (0.90%) followed by leaves and fruits. Further, seventeen compounds were characterized, and represented total amount (97.2‐99.5%) with domination of monoterpenes (12.5‐34.6%) and oxygenated monoterpenes hydrocarbon (61.8‐86.8%). α‐pinene (11.8‐24.7%), α‐phellandrene (1.2‐3.0%), p‐cymene (3.3‐3.9%) and 1,8‐cineole (58.3‐85.1%) were found as major compounds in C. citrinus samples. These major compounds are the quality chemical markers of C. citrinus oil. The findings revealed significant quantitative variations in EO composition of samples and were also clearly supported by multivariate statistical analysis. Moreover, EOs were evaluated for glucosidase and colon cancer cell lines inhibitory activities, which were found promising.
