Calling All Hosts: Bacterial Communication In Situ

Abstract: Bacteria are cosmopolitan organisms that in recent years have demonstrated many roles in maintaining host equilibrium. In this review, we discuss three roles bacteria can occupy in a host: pathogenic, symbiotic, and transient, with a specific focus on how bacterial small molecules contribute to homeostasis or dysbiosis. First, we will dissect how small molecules produced by pathogenic bacteria can be used as a source for communication during colonization and as protection against host immune responses. The abi… Show more

“…Due to this distinctive feature, EDX in a recent study was used to determine the nutrient utilization and distribution of elements (including heavy metal ions) in biological samples. 69 Considering the efficacy of EDX in various microscopic examinations, the distribution and location of metals in the leaf and root tissues of wheat grown in vitro was assessed by this method. The elemental analysis of the leaf and root tissues of wheat was done following heavy metal exposure (Fig.…”

“…symbiosis | natural products | biosynthesis | microbiomes | sponges T here is strong evidence that microbiome-derived specialized metabolites play key roles in health, disease, reproductive success, evolutive diversification, and the survival of macroorganisms (1,2). An important example is defensive symbiosis in which hosts benefit from protective substances synthesized by a microbial partner (3).…”

“…Most likely, the method favors slow-growing oligotrophic species that often follow the k-strategy growth model; these prefer nutrient-poor environments and are thought to be a major population in natural environments (Watve et al, 2000). As a natural habitat, the leaf pad was selected for our study to provide a suitable environment for co-culturing and to gain insight into interspecific/intraspecific interactions among the culturable community (Cleary et al, 2017). Throughout the present study, we investigated the cultivable community of bacteria residing in both the phyllosphere and rhizosphere compartments of sunflower plants.…”
