RESUMO -Objetivou-se verificar o estágio de maturidade sexual, a ocorrência do formato testicular e a relação entre características reprodutivas de tourinhos da raça Nelore. Foram utilizados 5.903 touros com média de 21 meses de idade submetidos a exame andrológico entre os anos de 1999 e 2003. Na ocasião do exame, foram registradas as seguintes características: perímetro escrotal (31,99 ± 2,23 cm), comprimentos testiculares esquerdo (11,21 ± 0,98 cm) e direito (11,26 ± 0,97 cm), larguras testiculares esquerda (5,92 ± 0,44 cm) e direita (5,97 ± 0,46 cm), formato testicular, variando de 1 a 5(1,72 ± 0,46), volume testicular (632,21 ± 132,72 cm 3 ), motilidade espermática progressiva retilínea (69,56 ± 12,31%), vigor espermático (2,87 ± 0,61) e morfologia espermática, com defeitos totais (22,19 ± 11,13%) e maiores (15,86 ± 10,45%) dos espermatozoides. As freqüências dos formatos testiculares foram longo (30,80%), longo-moderado (66,19%), longo-oval (2,49%), oval-esférico (0,02%) e esférico (0,04%). As correlações entre perímetro escrotal e características reprodutivas foram positivas. O perímetro escrotal é uma ótima característica para seleção de touros jovens da raça Nelore, que, na maioria Scrotal circumference is a good trait for selection of young Nellore bulls. More than 70% of the animals studied are sexually mature at 21 months old.Key Words: testicle biometric, testicular format, sexual maturity IntroduçãoA utilização de reprodutores selecionados por exame andrológico tem como finalidade a garantia da qualidade seminal e a melhora na eficiência reprodutiva do rebanho visando aumentar a lucratividade média por animal nascido. Esta prática é frequente em rebanhos-elite, porém ainda incipiente na maioria dos rebanhos comerciais. Em estudos e simulações que consideram aumento na proporção touro:vaca da relação tradicional 1:25 para 1:40 e 1:60, seria possível o descarte de 50% ou mais dos animais com baixo desempenho reprodutivo. RESUMO.-[Biometria escroto-testicular em caprinos: inϐluência de período do ano na bipartição escrotal.]Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a biometria escroto-testicular em caprinos com escroto simples e bipartido, criados no Estado do Piauí, Brasil, nos períodos seco e chuvoso do ano. The scrotal-testicular biometry was evaluated in goats raised in Piaui state, Brazil, presenting different levels of scrotal division, in rainy and dry periods of the year. For this study, eighteen male goats at mating age were accomplished and arranged into three groups (6 animals each), obeying the classiϐication as goats with no scrotal bipartition (GI), goats showing scrotal bipartition up to 50% of testicular length (GII), and goats with more than 50% of scrotal bipartition (GIII). The biometry of the scrotal-testicular was made evaluating the scrotal length (SL), scrotal circumference (SC), testicular length (TL) and testicular volume (TV). The results were evaluated following the variance analysis (ANOVA) and the SNK test applied on the average comparisons. The analysis of the data demonstrated high values, in dry and rainy periods, of SC (24.63cm/ 26.97cm), SL (16.61cm/ 18.24cm), TL (5.32cm/ 5.93cm), TV (173.81cm 3 / 203.01cm 3 ). This supports the hypothesis of the inϐluence of the period of the year and of the scrotal bipartition on the scrotal-testicular biometry in goat.INDEX TERMS: Goats, scrotal bipartition, biometry, year-periods variability.to testicular) e o grupo III (bipartição escrotal superior a 50% do comprimento testicular). Os dados mostraram que os animais do grupo GIII apresentaram, no período seco, os valores de CE, COE, CT e V de 24,63cm, 16,61cm, 5,32cm, e 173,81cm³, respectivamente e de 26,97cm para CE, 18,24cm para COE, 5,93cm para CT e 203,01cm³ para V, no período chuvoso. Todos esses valores foram superiores (p<0,05) aos encontrados para os animais dos demais grupos. Characterizing the Reproductive Physiology of the Male Southern Black Howler Monkey, Alouatta caraya

Limited reproductive data are available for any species of howler monkey, including those listed as threatened (Alouatta pigra) and endangered (A palliata) by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species Status (CITES) report. The Southern black howler monkey (A caraya) is being considered as a model species to develop assisted reproductive technology (ART) for vulnerable howler species. Specific objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of 1) time of year on ejaculate quality and testosterone concentration, 2) age of male on ejaculate quality, and 3) seminal plasma on sperm longevity in vitro. Three adult (4.5 to 5 years) and 3 subadult (1.5 to 2.5 years) males were evaluated for a 1.5‐year period. Semen samples were obtained by electroejaculation, and testosterone levels were monitored by fecal steroid metabolite radioimmunoassay. Males produced coagulum‐free ejaculates throughout the year. Likewise, most (4/6) males exhibited constant testosterone levels (3.66 ± 0.45 ng/g) during the year. Testosterone levels for the remaining 2 males, housed as a bachelor troop, were elevated (43 ng/g) during the months of May and June. Seminal characteristics were similar (P > .05) between age groups. Average semen volume was higher during the summer months (P < .05). Sperm concentrations were highly variable through the year and ranged from 7.0 × 106 sperm/mL to 583.0 × 106 sperm/mL. Percentages of motile sperm (73% ± 2.3%) and forward progressive sperm motility (3.3 ± 0.1), however, were consistent (P > .05) throughout the year. The average pH (8.9 ±0.1) and osmolality (356.7 ± 26.1 mmol/kg) of raw semen also did not vary (P > .05) throughout the year. Ejaculates from subadult males, however, contained more (P < .05) morphologically abnormal spermatozoa than adult ejaculates. In addition, in vitro sperm longevity was poor (<2 hours) for subadult male samples, regardless of the presence or absence of seminal plasma (P > .05). For adult males, seminal plasma was detrimental to sperm longevity; however, spermatozoa survived more than 5 hours in vitro when seminal plasma was removed. Although subadult males produce semen, these ejaculates would not be ideal for further characterization of seminal traits or development of ART for other howler monkey species.
