BackgroundThe aim of this study was to assess the relation between perceived social support and personal autonomy of individuals with intellectual disabilities and Health-Related Quality of Life.MethodsA cross-sectional study with a multicentre sample was carried out including 162 institutionalized individuals with intellectual disability. The measurement tool was a structured questionnaire with sociodemographic variables, and three scales: Functional Independence Measure(FIM) scale, Duke-UNC Functional Social Support Questionnaire, and SF-36 Health Survey, which were completed during an individual/family interview.ResultsThe perception of received social support is high on all 11 items of the Duke-UNC questionnaire, with an average of 3.45 for item-1 and 4.85 for item-11, which represents a total perceived support of an average 47.98 points (±SD7.30) (normal support). The Mental-Health component is rated worse than Physical-Health (67.41 vs. 71.74). The average rates for the different dimensions range from 57.34 points for Social-Functioning (the lowest rating) to 79.61 points for Bodily-Pain (highest rating). A multiple linear regression analysis reveals that the dimensions of Physical-Functioning (p < 0.001), Role-Physical (p = 0.016) and Bodily-Pain (p = 0.022), which are elements of the Physical-Health component, are independent predictive variables with the Degree of Autonomy (FIM) as a dependent variable. Social-Support (Duke-UNC) as a dependent variable is determined by the dimensions of Vitality (p = 0.014), Role-Emotional (p = 0.001) and Mental-Health (p < 0.001), which are part of the Mental-Health component and act as independent predictive variables.ConclusionsIndividuals with intellectual disability and a higher degree of personal autonomy determined by institutional and family support report better Health and Quality of Life.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (10.1186/s12913-018-3856-5) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

RESUMENIntroducción: la actividad física es una estrategia emanada desde la OMS, para el control del riesgo cardiovascular relacionado con el sedentarismo especialmente en condiciones que pueden ser vulnerables como es el caso de la discapacidad, especialmente física. Objetivo: determinar el nivel de actividad física de un grupo de personas en condición de discapacidad en Barranquilla, Colombia. Materiales y métodos: estudio descriptivo-observacional de corte transversal se trabajó con población diana (60 individuos) que acudían a un escenario deportivo de Barranquilla. Se utilizó el Global Physical Activity Questionnaire. Se hizo análisis de estadísticas descriptivas con el software Epi Info 7.2.2.6. Resultados: la edad promedio fue 36 años; 85 % eran hombres y 15 %, mujeres; procedentes de estratos 1, 2 y 3, con mayor participantes del estrato 2 (48 %). Con respecto al nivel de actividad física, la mayoría de los individuos se ubicó en nivel vigoroso (38 %), seguido de nivel bajo (35 %) y nivel moderado (27 %). El 65 % de los individuos en situación de discapacidad tenía un nivel de actividad física óptimo que favorece su condición de salud. Conclusiones: la población objeto de estudio se caracterizó por ser de bajos recursos económicos pero además con barreras para la adopción de estilos de vida saludable, a pesar de ello presentan un alto nivel de actividad física, lo que indica que el estrato social y la discapacidad no son impedimentos para la práctica de la actividad física. The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire was used. Analysis of descriptive statistics was done with the Epi Info 7.2.2.6 software. Results: the average age was 36 years; 85% were men and 15% were women; from strata 1, 2 and 3, with the largest number of participants in stratum 2 (48%). With regard to the level of physical activity, most individuals were at a vigorous level (38%), followed by a low level (35%) and a moderate level (27%). 65% of the individuals in a situation of disability had an optimal level of physical activity that favors their health condition.

Three book-length publications are arguably the foundational contributions to the study of physical disability representations in the aesthetic realm: Martin Norden's Cinema of Isolation: A History of Physical Disabilities in the Movies (1994), which traces the centrality of disabled characters in one hundred years of American film; David Mitchell and Sharon Snyder's innovative and foundational Narrative Prosthesis: Disability and the Dependencies of Discourse (2000), which privileges the nuances of literary disability representation; and Tobin Siebers's Disability Aesthetics (2010), which brought a similarly innovative thesis to bear on visual art forms, prioritizing painting and sculpture. Norden writes that "the history of physical disability images in the movies has mostly been a history of distortion in the name of maintaining an ableist society" (1994: 314). Mitchell and Snyder's book "argues that images of disabled people abound in history" (2000: 52) and that "once a reader begins to seek out representations of disability in our literatures, it is difficult to avoid their proliferation in texts with which one believed oneself to be utterly familiar" (2000: 52). Siebers's argument asserts that in painting and sculpture, the presence of disability is the element that has allowed "the beauty of an artwork to endure over time" (2010: 5). The representation of disability is, each text argues in its own way, thus central to the aesthetic histories of these directions in human cultural production. Often under-acknowledged as such in both literary and visual art, physical disability has long been clothed in the normative trappings of an able-bodied society and mobilized to suit a range of symbolic, metaphorical, and perhaps even purportedly transcendent artistic purposes. Preface xvii in their present form they have been greatly revised and elaborated.
