Calibration of selected pyranometers and satellite derived solar radiation in Puerto Rico

Abstract: Knowledge of solar radiation at the ground surface is valuable for many disciplines. In this study, ground-based sensors at Fortuna and Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, were used to calibrate daily-integrated satellite-derived solar radiation. The calibration equations yielded R 2 values of 0.88 and 0.83 at Fortuna and Mayaguez, respectively. A regression equation was also derived based on the combined data from the two locations with an R 2 of 0.87. The calibration equations for Fortuna and UPRM were validated using 28… Show more

“…Other methods have been proposed in the literature (Bender et al 2011;Harmsen, Tosado-Cruz, and Mecikalski 2014;and Thuman, Schnitzer, and Johnson 2012), and they are typically used by commercial data providers. This is because the short-term measured data set must first be subjected to a stringent quality-control procedure and then to more or less complex statistical methods.…”

“…Solar radiation is a critically important variable in the estimation of ET. Figures 2 and 3 show comparisons of the daily integrated solar radiation at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Fortuna Agricultural Experimental near Juana Diaz, PR, and the UPR-Mayaguez Campus (UPRM) in Mayaguez, PR, respectively [39]. The figures show a high degree of correlation between the remote sensing solar radiation and the measured solar radiation.…”

“…The coefficients of determination (r 2 ) for the UPRM and experimental station data were 0.88 and 0.83, respectively. (From [39]). Figure 4 shows a comparison of the ET o computed by the GOESWEB algorithm and from weather station data from the UPR Fortuna Agricultural Experiment Station, near Juana Diaz, PR.…”

“…Thus, bias removal can be achieved by finding a correction factor between ground and satellite data [13]. For daily values of global irradiation calibration of satellite-derived data using recalibrated pyranometers are proposed in Puerto Rico [17]. A more sophisticated method is also proposed for correcting HelioClim-3 by representing the error of clearness index by sinusoid functions [18].…”
