We extend a recent global analysis of nucleon parton distributions carried out at nextto-leading order (NLO) in the MS scheme to provide distributions in the so-called DIS scheme. We pay particular attention to the translation of the heavy quark distributions in going from the MS to the DIS scheme. We repeat the global analysis at leading order (LO) and comment on the major effects produced when going from LO to NLO. Finally we include in the global analysis a freely parameterised form of possible higher twist contributions to make an exploratory study of the size of these effects as a function of x.

We propose a class of forward-backward asymmetries with respect to the subprocess c.m. scattering angle in Vϩjet production at hadron colliders, with V being any of (W,Z,␥,H), which are directly proportional to the gluon distribution g(x). The information that these asymmetries can provide is complementary to that reachable from measurements of the transverse momentum and/or the rapidity distributions of a V in kinematical regimes where gluon scattering subprocesses dominate. The accuracy which can be reached in the W, Z and ␥ cases, at the upgraded Fermilab Tevatron and at CERN LHC, should allow a considerable improvement of our knowledge of the gluon distribution function, especially at large x. ͓S0556-2821͑99͒04801-8͔
