Calculation of the Solubility of a Mixture of Hydrogen and Nitrogen in Water at 25° in the Pressure Range of 50 to 1000 Atmospheres

Abstract: On evaporating on a steam-bath with concentrated hydrochloric acid and making alkaline with ammonia, this compound gave 2-anilino-4-oxy-5-methoxypyrimidine, m. p. 254-255°from alcohol. This same compound was obtained for comparison by heating 2-ethylmercapto-4-oxy-5-methylpyrimidine with aniline on a steam-bath until all the ethylmercaptan was evolved. Benzene was added and the solid removed by filtering. This was recrystallized from alcohol, m. p. 254-255°.

“…(18,19) We chose ZnSO 4 (aq) rather than CdSO 4 (aq) for a detailed examination, since it is less hazardous to work with. There are several determinations of the e.m.f.s of cell (V-ii) at T = 298.15 K. (18)(19)(20)(21)(22) The extensive sets of e.m.f.s of Bray (20) and of Rasaiah (18,19) are quite consistent with each other, but the low molality results of Cowperthwaite and La Mer (21) are somewhat discrepant, as previously noted by Rasaiah. (18,19) A similar comparison by us of the osmotic coefficients of ZnSO 4 (aq) derived from direct vapor pressure (23) and isopiestic measurements (24)(25)(26)(27)(28) indicates significant discrepancies between some of these studies.…”

“…Third, Kielland (22) reported e.m.f.s at four molalities from m = 5.12 · 10 −2 mol · kg −1 to m = 1.501 mol · kg −1 and these results appear to be consistent with those of Cowperthwaite and LaMer (21) at 5 · 10 −2 mol · kg −1 , but the measurements of these two studies do not quite overlap in molality. At m = (0.150 and 0.510) mol · kg −1 the e.m.f.s of Kielland are about 4 · 10 −4 V to 6 · 10 −4 V below those of Bray and of Rasaiah, whereas at 1.501 mol · kg −1 all three sets agree.…”
