Calculation of laminar recirculating flows using a local non‐staggered grid refinement system

Abstract: SUMMARYA grid-embedding technique for the solution of two-dimensional incompressible flows governed by the Navier-Stokes equations is presented. A finite volume method with collocated primitive variables is employed to ensure conservation at the interfaces of embedding grids as well as global conservation. The discretized equations are solved simultaneously for the whole domain, providing a strong coupling between regions of different refinement. The formulation presented herein is applicable to uniform or non… Show more

“…The extension to 3D problems does not present di culties, because the ÿnal form of the discretized equations (19)- (22) remains unchanged and the same is valid for most of the rest modelling expressions, as the cell-face calculation Equations (7) and (8) or the derivatives Equations (9). A little more complex would be the interpolation formulae of Equations (4), (17) and (18) for the auxiliary points deÿnition.…”

“…In an alternative technique, grid reÿnement algorithms are used to increase the resolution of a base grid at certain regions through cell subdivision [3,[9][10][11][12]. The resulting locally reÿned or embedded grids are usually solved together with the base grid, thus no information transfer is required.…”

“…The method is particularly suitable for problems with discontinuous properties such as those considered here. [60][61][62] Before the validation and discussion of the results in the next section, here we list the independent non-dimensional parameters governing the physics of the flow under discussion. These are: the fluid properties ratios …”
