Calculation of DEP and EWOD Forces for Application in Digital Microfluidics

Abstract: Two primary methods for electrostatically actuating microdroplets in channels currently exist: dielectrophoresis (DEP) for electrically insulating fluids and electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) for conducting fluids. In each case, a transverse electric field is used to create an electrostatic pressure, giving rise to the transport of individual liquid slugs. This paper examines the nature of the force distribution for both EWOD and DEP actuated droplets. The effects of system parameters such as contact angle a… Show more

“…Second, electrophoresis is simple and straightforward in principle, which provides high degree of freedom in chip design. “…However, exact modeling and simulations of droplet motion in EWOD is complicated [8]. A simplified model described in [9] is based on the assumption that droplet motion occurs as a result of the capillary line force generated when the electrode on which the droplet current resides is grounded while the adjacent electrode is simultaneously actuated.…”

“…Direct numerical simulation 26 and numerical simulations using approximations of the electrostatic effect 13,27 in droplet morphology and dynamics under EWOD and DEP have been investigated previously. Investigations into the nature of forcing in EWOD 28 and into the forcing nature of DEP have also been accomplished 29 . The focus of this paper is to extend the work of Ref.…”
