Calculating the costs of waste collection: A methodological proposal

Abstract: Waste collection and transport can generate up to 70% of the total costs of the system. Separated collection of recyclables implies additional costs for which the sale of recycled waste often does not compensate, but there is increased pressure to reach the long-term recycling objectives set by law. The proper estimation and monitoring of waste collection costs are essential to define the most cost-effective waste collection system. The aim of this study is to propose and implement a management tool to determi… Show more

“…In 2018, the activity of waste collection, sweeping and cleaning meant a cost of 576,000,000$ ARG (around 15,700,000 US$) representing 12% of the municipal budget and so far in 2019, expenses are recorded for 737,948,232$ ARG (around 16,400,00 US$) (Municipality of Bahía Blanca, 2018). Most of the waste is taken to the landfill, without any classification or processing, which is a common practice in developing countries (Boskovic et al, 2016). The landfill, due to its intensive use and the semiarid climate of the area that hinders waste biodegradation, is almost at the limit of its capacity (Rossit et al, 2017).…”

“…Babaee Tirkolaee et al (2018) optimized the problem of collecting municipal waste with regard to drivers and crew working time. (Babaee Tirkolaee et al , 2018) studied savings in the cost of MSW collection; (Zsigraiova et al , 2013; Boskovic et al , 2016; Nguyen et al , 2017) studied fuel consumption for MSW collection vehicles. (Larsen et al , 2009; Zsigraiova et al , 2013; Edwards et al , 2016) applied GIS-based approaches for urban waste collection.…”

“…As previously stated, the purpose of this research is to analyze the price drivers for the USAF's procurement of ISWM to identify the relationship between ISWM service-related price drivers, contracting-related price drivers, price and contractor performance. Past technical research regarding waste disposal has focused on solving waste management social and environmental problems (Achillas et al, 2013), cost-effective waste collection systems (Boskovic et al, 2016;Arribas et al, 2010) and alternative solid waste strategies that meet cost, energy and environmental emissions objectives (Solano et al, 2002). We focus on the procurement side of the service, specifically on category management and identifying price drivers to strategically source the service.…”
