Calculating Earth Dam Seepage Using Hydrus Software Applications

Abstract: Abstract. This paper presents simulations of water seepage within and under the embankment dam of Lake Kowalskie reservoir. The aim of the study was to compare seepage calculation results obtained using analytical and numerical methods. In April 1985, after the first filling of the reservoir to normal storage levels, water leaks was observed at the base of the escarpment, on the air side of the dam. In order to control seepage flow, drainage was performed and additional piezometers installed. To explain the ca… Show more

“…Sci and Circumiectus (2017) used a two-dimensional HYDRUS numerical model to estimate the amount of flushing. The model is verified with data measured from the dam [12]. Aghajani et al (2018) have investigated the effect of water sealing walls on the flow rate of earth dams with clay core [13].…”

“…The following Ackers-White formula is given. The sediment concentration, c, is then given in weightppm (g•m -3 ) [36]: (4) …where F gr is mobility number (m), h is depth (m•s -1 ), U is the velocity (m•s -1 ), m, n, A, C are compute parameters, and u* shear velocity (m•s -1 ).…”

“…Similar to the other type of mode simulation, the same parameters as in the model formula were saved; the extra term in Navier-Stokes equation was applied, turbulence model was based on (k = ω), and the sand slide algorithm was chosen for the angle 30°. In calculating sediment movement we applied Ackers and White's formula (4).…”

“…The use of computer software in predicting seepage under an earth dam has become more popular, but as noted by Šimůnek et al [14] and Li et al [15], it is important that these tools should be properly calibrated and validated, especially on the basis of values measured in the field [16]. Numerical analysis using HYDRUS code can be successfully used to describe seepage under the earth dam in different cases [17]. The attempt to determine the influence of clogged nonwoven geotextile on water flow in soil using HYDRUS (two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D)) Standard is another challenge.…”
