Calcium Sodium Phosphosilicate (NovaMin®): Remineralization Potential

Abstract: The authors declare no conflict of interest. N ovaMin ® is the trade name for a calcium sodium phosphosilicate bioactive glass that has been developed for use in oral health care. Originally developed for the treatment of hypersensitivity by the physical occlusion of dentinal tubules, recent studies have demonstrated a potential for this material to prevent demineralization and/or aid in remineralization of tooth surfaces. The mode of action of this material results from interactions with aqueous solutions. Wh… Show more

“…As the reactions and the deposition of Ca-P complexes continue, this layer crystallizes into hydroxycarbonate apatite (HCA), which is chemically and structurally similar to biological apatite. The combination of the residual calcium sodium phosphosilicate particles and the HCA layer results in the physical occlusion of dentinal tubules, which will relieve hypersensitivity [23].…”

For cold water stimulus in group I VAS score were 5. name for a calcium sodium phosphosilicate bioactive glass that has been developed for use in oral health care [23]. NovaMin precipitates calcium and phosphate and has been used to decrease hypersensitivity by occluding exposed dentinal tubules [24].…”

“…Being originally developed as a bone regenerative material, this compound has been shown to be effective in occluding dentinal tubules physically, through the development of a hydroxyapatite-like mineral layer [10].…”

“…By the findings of the present study it might be concluded that a pre-treatment of dentine with a mineral deposing [9,34] inducing prophylaxis paste (NUPRO Sensodyne) before application of the tested surface sealants does not affect stability and wear resistance of the applied surface sealant (Seal&Protect or K-0184). Furthermore, surface sealants (Seal&Protect and K-0184) provide a stable protective surface layer on dentine, which last for at least 12000 brushing strokes.…”
