Calcium pyrophosphatase dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease in a teaching hospital in Kuwait

Abstract: Objective-A Medline electronic search showed a paucity of reports on calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease (CPPD-CDD) from the Gulf region. To date only a single case report has been published from this region. Therefore, this study aimed, firstly, at finding out the prevalence of chondrocalcinosis in adult Arabs in Kuwait presenting with knee arthritis and, secondly, at carrying out an observational study of CPPD-CDD among Arabs in Kuwait. Methods-For the study of the prevalence of chondr… Show more

“…Deposition of CPPD crystals in fibrocartilage and hyaline cartilage is a common and predominantly age-related phenomenon [21,31]. Several studies show more clinical and radiographic progression for CPPD than for OA [2,25,27] and some surgeons consider chondrocalcinosis a contraindication to UKA [5,32].…”

“…However, another study conducted in patients undergoing knee replacement surgery, representing the same population as ours, revealed the prevalence of calcium crystal deposition disease to be as high as 60% 2 . In Kuwait, 0.5% of total patients who were evaluated at one rheumatology clinic over 5 years were diagnosed with CPPDDD 11 . The role of calcium crystal in OA has been reviewed 4,12,13 .…”

“…Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease is an inflammatory pyrophosphate arthropathy especially affecting the middle-aged and elderly population [1,7,10]. This well-defined disorder most frequently involves the knee, wrist, shoulder, hip, and ankle joints [1,4,7,10,11,13]. The main feature of the disease is the calcification of fibrous and hyaline cartilage [1,5,13].…”
