Calcium hydroxylapatite: A review on safety and complications

Abstract: Based on the results in this study, CaHA appears to have a good safety profile. Nodules are by far the most common AE. Of the reported nodules, 49% occurred in "dynamic" areas currently known for having a higher tendency for nodules. Several treatment approaches exist for managing CaHA nodules; however, in most cases, CaHA nodules are not visible and resolve without intervention.

“…5,6 Other described adverse events are infection, nodules and foreign body granulomas, which are uncommon, but must be discussed with the patients before the treatment. 19 The most severe complication is the vascular compromise. [20][21][22][23] This is why the knowledge of anatomy is very important to apply the adequate technique.…”

“…Even if nodules occur, they typically resolve without intervention. 40 Sculptra (Galderma Laboratories) is an injectable form of poly-L-lactic acid and works by stimulating fibroblasts and type I collagen growth. This process has an augmenting effect on soft tissues.…”

“…Hypersensitivity reactions, while rare, are possible with injection of any foreign substance 3 . Other early events are often technique‐dependent and include contour irregularities due to incorrect planes of injection, early infections, cutaneous necrosis, and blindness 2,3,5 . Delayed reactions include nodules, granulomas, and biofilms 5 .…”
