Calcium Evaporation from Metallurgical Grade Silicon by an Electron Beam Melting

Abstract: In order to investigate Ca evaporation behavior in the electron beam melting process, metallurgical-grade silicon was melted in an electron beam furnace with different experimental conditions. The results showed that the content of impurity Ca was significantly decreased in the early time, while these changed slowly with the extension of the melting. The removal rate of Ca was controlled by the transfer of Ca atoms from the bulk liquid silicon to liquid/gas phase interface within the range of experiment temper… Show more

“…The removal efficiency of Al and Ca under different solidification conditions is shown in figures 6 and 7. The curve is fitted by the experiment values from our previous work with different melting time in the case of instantaneous solidification [10,23]. The removal efficiency increases with the increase of the melting time and the trend becomes horizontal when melting is over 2000 s. The opened circles represent the removal efficiency of Al and Ca in different positions of the silicon ingot with the melting time of 1800 s and instantaneous solidification, which are close to the fitted curve.…”

“…The solubilities of metal impurities in SiO2 films are limited, so a certain thickness is required to remove these impurities. Some melted silicon particles existed in the central part, which illustrates that the temperature of the silicon particles can be increased by EBI [7][8][9]. The microscopic morphologies of the silicon particles were observed using SEM.…”

“…Electron beam melting is an effective method to removal volatile impurities in silicon. Researchers from Dalian University of Technology have done a lot of works on the removal mechanisms of volatile impurities and the influence of beam density on removal efficiency [5][6][7][8] . However, it is still not clear that the influence of electron beam parameters, such as beam density and beam size, on molten pool morphology, so the relationship between beam energy and smelting capacity cannot be estimated accurately.…”
