Calcium‐Dependent Tolerant Response of Cell Wall in Maize Mesocotyl Under Flooding Stress

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to find out the effect of calcium on flooded maize seedlings by anatomical and ultra‐structural analyses and by measuring the enzyme activity and gene expression of polygalacturonase (PG) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). For this, maize seeds were placed to germinate in germination paper saturated with CaCl2 0.75 %. Then, 4‐day‐old seedlings were subjected to flooding in the presence or absence of CaCl2. Mesocotyl sections were sampled daily for the anatomical and ultra‐structur… Show more

“…While in other tree species the activation of the antioxidant defense system as indicative of tolerance or sensitivity under soil waterlogging conditions has been studied, showing a direct relationship between increased antioxidant enzymes activity and stress tolerance (Blokhina et al 2003, Arbona et al 2008, Hossain et al 2009, Porto et al 2013, no information exists concerning avocado tree antioxidant response under low soil oxygen concentrations. In this work, antioxidant enzyme activities remained unchanged in roots and decreased significantly in leaves of waterlogged plants (Fig.…”

“…The plant cell wall, and especially the cell wall proteins, undergoes adjustments under stress, as reported previously [67, 68]. The cell wall proteins exhibit functions involved in the morphogenesis and signal transduction of plants, and changes in the cell wall are a sign of cell differentiation [11].…”

“…Quanto ao tempo de alagamento, Porto et al (2013) constataram redução na expressão de SOD em mesocótilo de plantas C18 alagadas por até 7 dias. Isso mostra que a SOD pode apresentar variações em sua expressão e sintetizar diferentes números de isoformas de acordo com o tecido, a espécie e o tipo de estresse (Zanandrea et al, 2009).…”
